The bacteria in the activated sludge take up these noxious substances from the water and convert them into less harmful compounds that can be dealt with. Once the bacteria is in there, you put that mixture into another tank where it allows all of those sludges and bacteria to settle down at the bottom. This is then sent up to the top and through further filters and treatments to make it usable again.
