Palm Oil Wastewater in Côte d’Ivoire

Palm oil wastewater treatment is a tough challenge for many enterprises. Yimei has rich project experience in palm oil wastewater treatment. High-concentration organic wastewater is generated during palm fruit processing, mainly from cleaning, pressing, extraction and other processes. Its water quality is complex with high pollution load, leading to great treatment difficulties.

Its core characteristics are as follows:

·  Extremely high organic pollutant content: The concentrations of COD and BOD are far higher than those of ordinary industrial wastewater, with good biodegradability of water quality;

·  High oil content: It also contains a large amount of suspended solids, saccharides and a small amount of heavy metals, which is prone to scum and facility blockage;

·  Unstable water quality: Acidic pH value, high water temperature, and obvious fluctuation of water volume with the production cycle;

·  Direct discharge prohibited: Direct discharge will pollute local water bodies and soil, and damage the ecological environment.



For this project, the client adopted civil engineering treatment, designed based on the principle of classification and combined with process adaptability.

The treatment methods are as follows:
Pretreatment stage: A grille tank, grit chamber and oil separation tank are constructed. The grille intercepts large particle impurities, the grit chamber removes sediment, and the oil separation tank separates floating oil to reduce the load of subsequent treatment. Reinforced concrete structure is adopted to adapt to high-load operation.

Main treatment stage: Microorganisms are used to degrade high-concentration organic matter, and the biogas produced is recycled. This stage includes further decomposition of residual organic matter, and a mud-water separation system is built supportingly to ensure the effluent meets the discharge standards.

The whole set of civil engineering facilities for palm oil wastewater treatment takes both stability and economy into account, adapts to the characteristics of water quality, and realizes up-to-standard discharge.
